The Center on Islam, Democracy, and the Future of the Muslim World is pleased to invite you to the Afghanistan-Pakistan Young Leaders Forum.  The seminar will bring together four students each from Afghanistan and Pakistan to discuss the many challenges and opportunities currently facing their countries.  Our panelists will cover key issues such as the militant Islamist groups, democracy and establishment of the rule of law, education, poverty, and the future of moderate Islam in both countries.

The seminar will be organized and led by two Hudson Institute interns: Jawanshir Rasikh, an Afghan Fulbright student at James Madison University, and Mariam Sabri, a student at Mt. Holyoke College from Karachi, Pakistan.

Participants in the roundtable discussion will include the following:

Hamid Arsalan is a graduate student studying political science at the University of Virginia and a research fellow at CSIS.  Prior to coming to the U.S., Hamid worked with the UNHCR in Afghanistan.

Latif Salem is a Fulbright scholar studying peacebuilding and conflict transformation at Eastern Mennonite University.  He has previously worked with UNICEF on Afghanistan reconstruction projects.

Khalid Mafton is a Fulbright scholar at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and an intern with the Afghanistan embassy in D.C.  He has worked with various NGOs in Afghanistan.

Farooq Tirmizi is an alumnus of Georgetown University, where he studied international political economy.  Farooq previously studied at madrassas in Karachi and Islamabad.

Sher Rehman Bangash is an undergraduate at George Mason University.

Babar Khan is studying international relations and quantitative economics at Tufts University and works with the Stimson Center’s South Asia and Space Security programs.

After the roundtable discussion, there will be a Question and Answer period.
